Rehabilitation after Spinal Surgery

Wellbridge Physiotherapy is primarily a spinal treatment practice with more than ten years experience in providing rehabilitation following spinal surgery.

Our rehabilitation program uses as its basis the McKenzie Method of mechanical diagnosis and therapy (MDT). The program also includes recovery of functional stability muscle control of the spine and aerobic fitness conditioning. Each rehabilitation program is specifically designed for the individual patient's clinical presentation following surgery. The rehabilitation program's emphasis is on active patient self-treatment, which minimizes the number of visits to Wellbridge Physiotherapy. We can work closely with your surgeon to achieve the best outcome for you following spinal surgery.

The primary goals of rehabilitation after spinal surgery are:
1. The recovery of spine function
2. The prevention of recurrence of mechanical spine pain.

The goals are achieved through:
1. Patient education regarding the causes of lost spine function and mechanical spine pain
2. Instruction in self treatment posture correction and exercises to recover spine function and to abolish mechanical spine pain
3. Instruction in the prevention of recurrence of lost spine function and spine pain

Rehabilitation after spinal surgery is most effective when started the day following the surgery. Delaying the start of rehabilitation may lead to slower recovery and poor outcome. The most important measure of good outcome from spinal surgery is the ability to prevent recurrence of pain and loss of function.

As an example, following lumbar microdiscectomy there is a risk of re-herniation of the disc, which may make another surgery necessary. Following a lumbar microdiscectomy, the rate of repeat surgery is reported in professional literature as being between 8% and 25%. With rehabilitation starting the day after lumbar microdiscectomy surgery, Wellbridge Physiotherapy patients have had a repeat surgery rate of only 2.4% shown in a two year follow-up outcome survey.

If you have had spinal surgery recently or some time ago, it is still important that you recover your spine function and learn how to prevent recurrence of mechanical spine pain. Wellbridge Physiotherapy provides comprehensive rehabilitation after these spinal surgeries.
